Illegal Reading

During the Civil War in the United States, African American slaves were not allowed to learn to read. Why do you think it was against the law to teach African Americans how to read?  (Student ID)

  1. Government wanted to have the African Americans under its law and did not teach them how to read and write because slaves would know about political, economic and all injustices that the government had done with them. If slaves knew read and write they could be against the law.

  2. It was against the law because other people think that the slaves were just to do the work and not to learn. They just want the slaves to do all the work for them. 986605

  3. In the 18th century there were no schools in the southern states of America that admitted black children to its free public school. The situation was better in the North and the first African Free School was opened in New York City. In addition there was racism.

  4. African American slaves weren't allowed to learn to read because The United State didn't want to be educated slaves in his factories because they were meticulous for their slaves at that time. They knew if slaves get education, then they must be solidarity for their freedom, and they were want their salves work for their perennial plants in the fields. 996631

I think that African American were not allowed to learn how to read because they were slaves. However, they wanted them to do their work, they were exploiting and making them worked hard. If any slave wanted to learn how to read it was against the law and nobody felt a sense of solidarity for them.

  6. African Americans were slaves. The Government didn't let the slaves learn how to read and write because it feared the slaves would learn about freedom. Then, the slaves might feel solidarity and begin agitating for freedom. 964876

slaves were not allowed to go to school because they came in The US to work. However to me is against the law why do they don't allowed them to read. As a human being i think all people have a right to have an education and to learn something good. People thought if they are going to educate them they might ask for more salary or stop working.

The slave owners didn't want the slaves to learn how to read because they knew education was a way out. Through reading, the slaves could learn about the different ways other people were living their lives and they would get ideas about revolting against their owners.

  9. During the Civil War was illegal to teach how read or write to African American, because the owners feel superior to their race yet, and because they do not want they to revolt against the owners. JA 997224

  10. I think it was against the law to teach African Americans how to read because it was unconstitutional. One of the amendments says we have right to the education without to specify discrimination about the people. In that time the slaves were considered like property. The slaves weren't seen like our fellow; therefore, they were prohibited their own right a lot of things.987062

  11. African Americans were not allow to read and write because the more they read and write they would have an education and they will understand plus will resist the slavery. Also, most of them were too busy being forced to work a ton of hours and if the slavery were discovered their were punished. Therefore, African Americans will be more solidarity and will make a change in their life time.(965354)

  13. For many many years African America's were not allow to read.I have been studying history of the US,and part of the slave's education is so sad.African American people were working very hard mostly on plantations. In my opinion there are some reason's for restricting slaves from education.First of all shortage of time, slaves were working ten to fifteen hours per day.Second reason is fair of losing a worker.Wealthy farmers knew that as soon as African American will learn how to read and write,he won't work on the field anymore. The third reason is government pressure.

  14. At that time South of the country was producing a lot of goods. Moreover, South had trades with Europe. To teach a slave to write and read, means to give him a power. No slave will work for free after he will get education.
